More than mushrooms

Kuhenza for the Children’s recent visit to Uwezo Youth Empowerment organization in Rwanda gave us an opportunity to witness a vibrant parent support group livelihood program .

In Kirehe, parents to children with disabilities came together and are now building something remarkable for their welfare. What began as a simple savings group has grown into a thriving livelihood program under Uwezo Youth Empowerment’s support.Through technical support, psycho social care and mentorship ,the group launched a mushroom growing project that started with around forty(40) spawns, last year which has almost tripled its production. This is just part of the story.

For these parents, the group is more than just a source of income,it is a sanctuary .The parent support group provides a judgement free space where they can speak openly, support one another and be seen.In a world that often sidelines persons with disabilities,to this group ,it is a central matter.

When a group of parents and caregivers to children with disabilities choose to show up for one another, this becomes revolutionary. The challenges of taking care of children with disabilities are unique and immense, especially in rural contexts, the deepen further because the specialized serviced are hard to reach, information is scarce, infrastructure is unreliable.

Coming together is the beginning of the successful inclusion journey. We were really inspired and hopes to carry these lessons with us back home.
