What we do

Medical Intervention

Kuhenza helps children with disabilities access the medical care, equipment and supplies they need to reach optimal health and wellness. We work to ensure these medical services are high-quality, consistent, timely and tailored to the child’s unique needs. As part of this process, we also help families impacted by disability access caregiver training, transportation to facilities, and nutritional support.

We employ medical professionals, such as physio- and occupational therapists, to care for children with disabilities at their homes and schools. In addition to assessing and treating the children, many of these professionals provide parents and teachers with training on basic care skills to improve the frequency and quality of care these children receive. These professionals can provide care for several children each day and do so even when the children’s schools are closed by visiting them at home.

Since we secured our own vehicle in 2015, we have been able to visit even more children each day. As with our medical staff, we work with the leaders and communities to make these health care positions sustainable by shifting their salary payments to the local government.

Surgeries

We provide transportation and payment of medical fees for treatment and correctional surgeries for conditions such as hydrocephalus, spina bifida and cerebral palsy.

This is done at Kijabe Mission Hospital, Tenwek and Coast General Hospital.

medication

We provide children with disabilities with vital medication as well as payment for consultation and hospital admission.

Kuhenza also provide transportation to and from hospital appointments.

Therapy

We have an Occupational Therapist based at Gede Special School. She also provides services at our Advocacy Centre and Timboni Special School.

In collaboration with The Ministry of Health we provide mobile therapy clinics in remote areas of Kilifi county.

Emergencies

In case of an emergency, whether at one of the schools or at home, we respond by providing transportation to hospital and we support the parents in paying the hospital fees.  We also encourage the parents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Assistive Devices

According to each child’s individual need, Kuhenza provides assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, hearing- and sitting aids.
